Below are questions that are often asked and others to consider in looking for long-term care services for an elderly family member. Costs for long-term care services in senior housing facilities vary greatly depending on the type and amount of care needs, the provider, and where the facility
is located.
Important considerations.
- As you plan think long-term about what services will be needed now and later, because moving is very hard on
the elderly.- Will increased services be needed. Will they increase costs beyond what is affordable?
- Will your family member be asked to move because of a higher level of care?
- Do you want a corporate environment or do you want locally owned and managed?
- Can you call the person in charge directly with your concerns or do you have to go through channels?
- Do your medications need to be administered or supervised.
Research questions for assisted living facilities.
- What is your direct care staff (hands-on) to resident ratio?
- Do you have awake night-time staff?
- Do you offer activities?
- Church services?
- Do you provide meal substitution if resident does not want what is being served?
- Is there a cost for dietary supplements (ensure, boost, etc.)
- Under what conditions can my loved one be discharged?
- Do you have a doctor that comes to your facility?
- Do you provide transportation to doctor and/or shopping?
- If yes, is there a transportation charge?
- Do you have levels of service cost or an all-inclusive rate?
